The era of 17th and 18th century was the ruling period of the king Upendra Bhanja. He was not only the ruler of the state but the king of odia literature too. Upendra Bhanja was born at silk city Berhampur. He was awarded the title 'Kabi Samrat'- 'The Emperor of Poets'. This greatest poet of odia literature had well established Riti juga or Bhanja juga.
As continuing the legacy of royality he also have persuade the hereditary poetic nature. But he declined his royalty and dedicated towards literature. He had mastered Sanskrit dictionaries like Amara Kosha, Trikonda Kosha and Medini Kosha. Upendra Bhanja was the creator of Geetabhidhana, an odia dictionary.
Poet Upendra was the master of 'Reeti' and 'Dheena' style of poetry. His works are full of comparable factors, 'upama', 'alankara', 'rasas' etc. To understand the depth meaning of his kavyas, one must have high skilled in both odia and Sanskrit literature. His great poetic talents are expressed as following the order of spirituality and high values of morality. King Bhanja's kavyas are written by the means of imaginary ornamental expression. The character of his expressions might played negligible character but his techniques of the classical Indian literature dominates with magnetic, lovable, intellectual manner.
His collection of kavyas includes 52 books. But now only 22 are available. With the absence of printing press many of hand-written books have been lost. 'Rasapanchaka' was the first published work of Upendra Bhanja. The interesting part of his writing is most of his kavya's each and every line has started from the same word.
Baidehisha Bilasa, Rasaleela, Subhadra Parinaya, Brajaleela, Premasudhanidhi, Kala koutuka, Koti Bhahmanda Sundari, Rasika Harabali, Satisha Bilasa, Damayanti Bilasa, Padmabati Parinaya and so on.
Except kabi samrat Upendra Bhanja had also honored with 'Bira bara'.
